A rare work by the distinguished Hungarian historian, polymath, and travel writer Alois Freiherr von Mednyánszky (1784–1844), regarded as one of the jewels of Romantic literature on Slovakia. In this book, the author describes in both a poetic and documentary manner a journey along the river Váh, from its upper reaches down to the lower regions, capturing the landscape, towns, castles, and the life of the local inhabitants. This second, enlarged edition includes 16 lithographic views, which visually enrich the text and rank among the most valuable iconographic sources for the history of Slovak towns and landscapes in the first half of the 19th century. Original edition published in Pest (today Budapest) by the renowned publisher Konrad Adolph Hartleben. Old ownership signature on the half-title, otherwise a clean and attractive copy. Contemporary half-cloth binding, boards somewhat rubbed, but the binding remains entirely sound
